Embracing the Trend of Minimalist Decorating

If you are moving into a new apartment or redecorating the one you’re already in, consider minimalist living. Minimalism shouldn’t be confused with decluttering although keeping “stuff” to a minimum is kind of the idea. Minimalism means to pare back knick-knacks and other space-consuming items and keeping and displaying only what you need. It also means sticking to a simple, neutral color palette and using bright colors and metallics only for accents.

One advantage of minimalist decorating is that by using light colors and reducing clutter your apartment will automatically look bigger.  Minimalist décor is easy in an apartment because most apartments are decorated in neutral colors (think white or off-white walls and beige or gray carpeting) to begin with, so you are starting with a blank canvas. Choose an oatmeal-colored sofa in a nubby texture and layer a beige carpet with a soft cocoa-colored throw rug. Throw pillows in the same color family will add warmth and texture. Black and white is also a popular combination in minimalist decorating. If you are afraid that this will look too sterile, pick up some soft botanical prints and display them in simple black frames.

If you are afraid that all of these neutral colors equal bland, then add a touch of color, but choose only one color and build around it by choosing pieces in the same tone. Cool colors will exude a feeling of calm and serenity whereas warm colors will exude energy. Another way to add color is to dedicate one corner or area of the apartment to your favorite color. You can also take minimalist design in a different direction by creating a light and airy space. Choose breezy textiles such as linen, open-weave fabrics, and lace, and accent pieces with rounded edges and soft fabrics.

If you are committed to minimalist decor, then you need to make sure you keep up the aesthetic. Keep everything in its place and buy and consume only what you need. If you’re the type of person who thrives in quiet elegance with everything in order, then you will happily embrace minimalist decor.
